All of us go through our daily lives with a continuous stream of thoughts. This is what we refer to as our “inner dialog” or “stream of consciousness”. We don’t think much about it – this is simply the way the human mind works.
But we need to be careful not to place too much importance on the content. That’s right – I am telling you not to pay too much attention to your thoughts. Now I am not talking about those situations where you are concentrating on a particular subject, and are truly focused.
Mostly here I am concerned with the thoughts that we call up repeatedly with respect to others in out lives, their motives, their thoughts and our reactions to them. It is important, when we catch ourselves “telling a story” about someone that we stop. Just stop for a second and ask yourself if you know that this is true, or if it is simply a story you tell yourself.
The reason this is so important is that if we are simply telling ourselves stories out of habit, then we are basing our responses to others, our actions, our lives, even our personal characters, on things that are not true. This is quite simply a recipe for disaster.
Situation comedies are built on such behaviors, but in real life it can be anything but funny. It is important to remember that our thoughts are not real – but the can lead to real consequences.
A very wise man once told me that “Your thoughts become your actions, actions become habits, habits become your character, and your character is your destiny”. Too true. Or to put it another way: You become the thing you think about most. So if you spend your day telling yourself that others have only the most base of motives for their actions and that your sweetie may be stepping out on you – you will become a small paranoid person.
S the next time you have a negative thought, just stop and ask yourself: “Is this absolutely, certainly true, or am I just telling myself a story?”
